July 2003

2 July – CRASH! My computer totally crashed today and I lost EVERYTHING. Email addresses, lesson plans, etc. You name it, I lost it. I had to reinstall windows. So, if you haven’t heard from me for a while, that’s probably why. Please email me so I’ll have your address again.

8 July – I’m proud of myself. Today, I mastered changing my mobile phone account and my Deutsche Telekom account to electronic bills (both websites are completely in German). I’ll no longer get paper ones, and can download the electronic ones. I’ve also changed my mobile phone account so that I’ll save 3 Euros per month. That’ll help offset the 5 Euro per month increase in my internet service provider (all ISPs raised their rates by 5 Euros at the beginning of June).

9 July – Today was a good day. I had to work from 7h30 – 9. After that, I debated whether I should go to my German class or not. I finally decided to, and am glad that I did. I learnt quite a bit. Also, Anis, a Tunisian students who stopped attending class at the beginning of July stopped in to say good bye. He’s flying back to Tunisia on Friday because his visa expires then.

10 July - 7h03 – WOOO HOOO! I got the Olympic tickets I applied for. No, I haven’t received my notification yet, but I just checked my Visa card online and saw that it had been charged for the full 260 amount last night. Great!

11 July - 5h35 – TGIF. I have to work at 7h30 again today, so I’m up early. I set my alarm for 6h, but woke up at 5h35 and couldn’t get back to sleep. I’ll leave for work at 7h, which’ll get me there at 7h15, so I have time to make photo copies. Mr. 7h30 has told us that he’ll end his lessons at the end of 2003, and I can’t wait. I hate getting up at this time.

16 July - It’s been an easy week for me, for a change. Our day classes have stopped, so all I have this week are afternoon and evening classes. Monday I taught one class from 17h30 – 19h. Tuesday I taught two classes, 17h30 – 19h & 19h10 – 20h40. Today I’m teaching two classes also, 15h – 16h30 & 17h30 – 19h. I don’t mind having an easy week like this, because I’ll be teaching an intensive summer course for two weeks starting on Monday.

I thought that I could get out of teaching Mr. 7h30 during the intensive course, since it starts at 8h30, but today David said that he’d have my intensive course start at 9h so I can do both. Oh well. More money for me.

Booking ahead is good. I’ve just taken a look at some of the flights I’ve booked, and the prices have gone up a lot. Here are a few examples:
Depart       Arrive I paid       Now
Frankfurt Pescara €70.96 €250.72
Luxembourg Bangkok €671.38 €1,135.06

On Monday, I sent €169.80 to a travel agency in Croatia for the 6 nights of accommodation they booked for me last week. However, with bank transfer fees, it turned out to be €198.85 (they insisted on a bank transfer and wouldn’t take a credit card). Why did I do that? Because it’s high season in Croatia, and I wanted to make sure I had a place to stay. Oh well. At least I’ve mastered making online bank transfers.

I’ve got a lot of my accommodation booked for upcoming trips, due to it being high season in many places. It was a big problem finding a cheap single room in Rome, but I finally found one for €30 per night for 3 nights in late Sept. After that, I’ll move onto Naples and have found a room there for €25 per night. Then, I need to spend one more night in Rome, because I have an early flight. I’ll probably just spend that in a dorm in a hostel, about €18 per night. I can’t believe how bloody expensive Rome is in it’s high season (1 Apr – 30 Oct).

London’s going to break my budget again. The cheapest I can find there is £30.00 per night, about €43 per night. However, it’s in Central London. A price that low in NYC would be impossible to find.

I’ve also been doing some booking for relatives that are coming out in October. I managed to save them about €240 on their flight, and about €200 on their rental car by booking locally instead of letting them do it though a travel agent in the USA.

17 July - 18h30 – I just got home and found out that my fridge is making a chirping sound because it’s not cool enough. I turned it up, so hopefully it’ll stop.

22h – It hasn’t stopped yet. This is really annoying. I’ve just unplugged the darn thing and will deal with it tomorrow.

18 July – 15h – Operation Defrost Fridge has been completed. It’s defrosted and completely cooled down. I just turned it to the coldest setting. So here I am, waiting for my fridge to get back to normal cooling level, so I know if I can buy anything to put in it or have to tell the landlord it’s broken. I really hate the chirping sound it’s making until it gets to a certain temperature.

19 July - It’s stopped chirping! Hooray!

20 July - 16h10 – I’m home now and am chatting with Saikat again, as I do every Saturday and Sunday.

17h – The stupid fridge ‘low temperature light is on and it’s started chirping again. Probably because It was 36C today, and I turned it down to #5 to save energy. Oh well. Let the landlord pay the higher energy bill. I’ve just turned it back to #7.

18h35 – It’s stopped chirping.

24 July - 6h47 It’s quite cool out this morning, 16C. That’s one good thing about Germany…even when it gets blazing hot, you can usually sleep at night.

30 July - 5h05 – It’s early. I have to work from 7h30 – 19h with breaks from 14h – 15h and 16h30 – 17h30. It’s going to be a long day.

19h30 – I’m home, and I survived the day.

I got a new flatmate today, Andrew from England. The bosses brought him up from the school in Karlsruhe to work here since it’s quite there and vacation time here. He told me that he’s going to be working at our school until at least December. He’s a bit odd.

31 July – 5h – One more day to go! I have to work all day again today, but that’s okay. I have to teach my intensive course 9h – 12h15, a single course 12h30 – 14, then I have to drive out to Neuwied and teach there from 15h – 18h. After that, I have to do my laundry, buy film and then go home and do some more cleaning and start packing. A full day.

18h30 – I’m home. The 2nd class in Neuwied combined with the first class, so I was done at 16h30 (but I get paid for both classes). After that, I changed and did my laundry. I went to Saturn (an electronics store in the mall) and bought film while my clothes were in the washer (4 rolls per box, 200 ASA, 36 exposure for only 6.99 – I bought two boxes), threw my clothes in the drier, went to the supermarket, went back to the laundry mat to get my clothes and am now home. I’m glad I had a car today.
